Elections, Awards and Sports at St. Joseph’s!

Good day from St. Joseph’s Indian School!

Last week was a beautiful week here along the banks of the Missouri River.

sunset-1With the recent time change, the sun is now setting over the river just as the school/work day comes to an end and we are seeing some glorious sunsets reflecting off the water and highlighting the few leaves that are still on the trees.  It has even been so nice out that many fisherman are taking advantage and getting in some last casts.

ELECTION

Just as the recent election has been the BIG news around the country, it was also the focus of many conversations here on campus the past few weeks.

election-1On Monday, November 7, the 8th graders hosted Kids Voting USA for grades 1-8. Each class was given the opportunity to head to the ‘ballot stations’ around the school and cast their votes. After voting, each students received an “I voted!” sticker, something the adults did not get this year after voting at the Brule County Courthouse!

Our students’ voting results were:

  • President/Vice President – Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine
  • South Dakota US Senator- John Thune
  • South Dakota US Representative- Kristi Noem
  • South Dakota Public Utilities Commissioner- Henry Red Cloud.

The 8th graders also tackled the various amendments, initiated and referred laws.  There were 10 on the South Dakota ballot this year, so they definitely had to do their homework to read and reflect on what each was proposing!

FALL SPORTS AWARDS

On Tuesday, November 8, we held an assembly to present sports awards for this years’ football, volleyball and cross country seasons.  Each coach would invite their team to come forward and then would mention the reasoning for why a certain player was being honored.  After each group was honored, a picture of the winners was taken.

The cross country team did well and the volleyball teams also had a successful season.  The 7th and 8th grade boys’ football team started off well but injuries unfortunately plagued the latter part of their season. There are some good candidates in the 6th grade who will be moving up next year and the coaches are eager to have them on the team.

We congratulate all those who took part in fall sports. They represented St. Joseph’s Indian School very well!

BASKETBALL

The girls’ basketball seasons are officially underway, as they have hosted a few games and have traveled to play others.

Recently, the 7th and 8th grade teams hosted Chamberlain’s teams.  There was a good turnout of fans supporting both sides, which the concession stand always enjoys.  The games were close but Chamberlain came out on top in both games.

bbWhen looking at the talent on the floor, it looks like Chamberlain High School could have some good high school teams in a few years since the grade school had height and tenacity and St. Joseph’s had speed and gumption.  It will be nice to see how they mold and mesh when they begin to play on the same team together in high school.

Our weather looks like it will hold for the majority of this week, but one staff just mentioned there is talk of some snow at the end of the week. We’ll see.

I hope you have a great week and have the opportunity to enjoy and take part in various activities happening around you.

May God continue to bless you with happiness and good health.

At St. Joseph's Indian School, our privately-funded programs for Lakota (Sioux) children in need have evolved over 90 years of family partnership, experience and education. Because of generous friends who share tax-deductible donations, Native American youth receive a safe, stable home life; individual counseling and guidance; carefully planned curriculum based on Lakota culture and individual student needs and tools to help build confidence, boost self-esteem and improve cultural awareness. All of this helps children to live a bright, productive, possibility-filled future.
