Fr. Anthony, two of our high school girls, a houseparent and two staff from Planned Giving took off for New Jersey, where they’ll have a couple of appreciation luncheons for our donors.

I’m usually the MC at those, but I still need to get a little stronger before I start traveling.

Before the crew left I went over to the high school house to wish the girls well. Talia said she was a bit nervous, so I had her practice with me the things she planned to say.

I didn’t see Shay until just before they were ready to leave, but I sent her off with a hug and load of good wishes.

I find that our students have a lot to say about life on Indian reservations and hopes and dreams for a better future. It just takes a lot of encouragement to get them to believe in themselves and know that so many people are interested in what they have to say.

Author: St. Joseph's Indian School

At St. Joseph's Indian School, our privately-funded programs for Lakota (Sioux) children in need have evolved over 90 years of family partnership, experience and education. Because of generous friends who share tax-deductible donations, Native American youth receive a safe, stable home life; individual counseling and guidance; carefully planned curriculum based on Lakota culture and individual student needs and tools to help build confidence, boost self-esteem and improve cultural awareness. All of this helps children to live a bright, productive, possibility-filled future.

  1. You and St. Josephs get the job done. You are ‘way ahead of the game and time will prove it ! Today is important..and it builds tomorrows. I believe that you know that.
And next year you will be going along with them..leaving behind what is happening today..and today will be yesterday..!
    How neet is THAT..?

  2. Dear Fr. Steve,

Hope the girls have fun in New Jersey and don’t get too nervous talking in front of alot of people.

They have the support of all that are there as well as the support and prayers of all who reply to your posts on a daily or somewhat daily basis.

Soon enough you will be strong enough to attend these seminars with the others. Of this there is no doubt. God is on your side and watching over you and the staff and children of the school and camp.

Hope all is well on all fronts.

    God Bless,

    Nancy & Kenny

  3. Fr Steve,
you have seen in Columbia tha we are very much interested in what the students have to say! Most of us have never seen a reservation (Cherokee is very different) but get a glimpse from movies like “Smoke Signals”.
My best wishes for your continued healing and the success of “your” children. Paula

  4. Hi Fr. Steve –

I remember well the great time I had at one of these seminars a few years ago in Brookfield, WI. It was a pleasure to meet you & the other supporters of St. Joseph’s.

Hope you are having a good & restful day!

    Blessings – Susan
