Author: St. Joseph's Indian School

At St. Joseph's Indian School, our privately-funded programs for Lakota (Sioux) children in need have evolved over 90 years of family partnership, experience and education. Because of generous friends who share tax-deductible donations, Native American youth receive a safe, stable home life; individual counseling and guidance; carefully planned curriculum based on Lakota culture and individual student needs and tools to help build confidence, boost self-esteem and improve cultural awareness. All of this helps children to live a bright, productive, possibility-filled future.

  1. I have joined the many people who are praying for you
in your cancer ordeal and asked for prayers for you
with my prayer group at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal church in Madison, Wis…..but I’ve been sending contributions to support St. Joe’s school for some time and wish I could do more! The first first time I sent one, I told you that there probably weren’t many of your supporters who have stayed in Chamberlain a number of times on our
many trips to and from Illinois andthe Seattle area
starting in June 1984. We chose a motel on the high hill overlooking the river and what a view that is! I have a picture of us looking out at one of the most magnificent sunsets we had ever seen and other travelers were watching too. The other attraction even when we stayed in town near the bridge was THE drugstore where we ate dinner and always breakfast before going on our way heard about it from friends.
We haven’t made that trip driving since 1995 and we loved that trip. I’m 88 on the outside but 25 inside.
and spent the first 9 years of my life living near
Chippewa Indians on Lake of the Woods on the Canadian border of Minn in Warroad where my Dad had a drugstore and set the example of being a real friend to the very
poor Chippewas by giving them medicine when needed and
ice cream cones for the children. There was no reservation but I we learned from Dad to always be
racially tolerant and I have been on the side of native
Americans all my life. I have also seen the Pine River
reservation and it is a disgrace . The Bureauof Indian
    Affairs seemed/seems(?) to ignore them.

Do forgive my long message. I will check on how you are doing regularly and know that your strong Jesuit faith will sustain and heal you. I can see from your pictures with the children that you have a sense of humor and
THAT will help a lot…that and , as you said, music.
I can still play anything on the piano and living in a
complex for Independent Srs., I play and hope that they will sing! Despite two artificial hips, I dance to music a lot when I’m alone…I just have to hang on to a chair! We have a Roman Catholic mass here once a month with a local priest as the celebrant and everyone is welcome to come and of course, I go. We also have 2 resident Nuns…one is a hospital chaplain and the other is head chaplain at the wonderful hospice where
my Bob died. I’ve already told Sr. Georgeanne that when I go, I hope it will be there!!!

Godspeed and with love in Christ’s name,

  2. My prayer for you Fr.Steve is that the GOD OF ALL COMFORT keep you in his loving arms. Jesus did promise that by his stripes we were healed and I am claiming that promise for you today. Your name will be going on my Church’s Prayer List this week. May the comfort that only Jesus can give be yours today. I know what it feels like to be held in the arms of our Loving Creator and I am sure that is where you are now. The sound of the word Cancer and Open Heart Surgery is very scary, but if our trust and faith is in our Creator Jesus Christ who or what do we have to fear, I know since I have had both. May God continue to bless you as you go through this ordeal.

    In the love of Christ

  3. Dear fr. Steve,

I send financial donation from time to time to help with the children.

I was saddened to learn of your cancer. But God is able to heal you and He will. Sometimes, God puts out faith to the test for us to see where we stand in our walk with Him.
You have been very faithful and God is going to be faithful also to you. I am praying daily for your recovery so that you could continue to actively be in the children’s lives.
Keep the faith and may God continue to bless and enrich your life with each new day.God bless you. He loves you dearly.

    With Christ’s Love,

    Josephine Marsh-Haffner
