At St. Joseph’s Indian School, we believe the values we instill in our students — respect, gratitude, hope and integrity — don’t just shape young lives. They ripple outward, touching families, communities and future generations.
Taivin, a proud alum and new father, is living proof.
As a young boy, Taivin walked the halls of St. Joseph’s learning what it meant to be respectful, kind and hopeful. He built friendships, leaned on mentors and absorbed the quiet lessons that come from being part of a caring community.

Prior to his high school graduation in 2023, he was named a Build Dakota Scholar. The Build Dakota Scholarship is a full-ride scholarship program in South Dakota designed to support students pursuing high-demand technical careers. After receiving this, he studied Building Trades Technology at Lake Area Technical College, where he graduated in 2025.
“St. Joe’s taught me how to be independent and take care of myself,” Taivin reflected. “I’m grateful for my experience at St. Joe’s.”
Now in early adulthood, Taivin is thriving both professionally and personally. He works for Dakota Land Design and finds joy in the variety and purpose of his work.
“I’m having a great time learning new skills and getting more hands-on with projects,” he shared. “I get to do a little bit of everything, from framing to sweeping the floor, and I really enjoy it.”
Taivin’s decision to pursue a trade career was deeply influenced by the people who surrounded him growing up — especially his father. Raised in a community where blue-collar work was a way of life, he absorbed the values of hard work, reliability and pride in a job well done. Watching his dad’s dedication and integrity day after day inspired Taivin to follow a similar path, one where he could build, contribute and grow with purpose.
But the most transformative chapter of Taivin’s life has just begun: fatherhood. It’s a role that has deepened his sense of purpose, challenging him to lead with intention and reflect the values he hopes to pass on to his son.
“It’s exciting and definitely a new learning experience for me,” he said. “Becoming a dad has made me more mindful of how I act and the example I’m setting.”
When asked what success looks like now, Taivin didn’t hesitate.
“Success for me now is simple,” said Taivin. “It’s about being the best dad I can be and making sure my family is taken care of. If my son has what he needs, and he grows up knowing he’s loved and supported, then I’m successful.”
Taivin’s connection to St. Joseph’s remains strong. The relationships he built with teachers and mentors didn’t end at graduation. They evolved into a meaningful support system that still surrounds him today. Whether it’s a quick check-in or a thoughtful message, those moments remind him that he’s part of something lasting: our thiyóšpaye — extended family.
“I try to keep in touch,” said Taivin. “It’s nice to still have that connection.”
Taivin knows firsthand that growing up isn’t always easy, and that even in a supportive environment like St. Joseph’s, there can be moments of doubt, loneliness or fear. But he also knows that those moments don’t define the journey. What matters is the steady presence of people who care, and the courage to keep going. His words offer comfort and perspective to current students who feel overwhelmed or uncertain.
“Hang in there — everything will work out the way it’s supposed to,” said Taivin. “I know it might feel tough sometimes, but you’re never alone as a student at St. Joseph’s Indian School. There’s always someone here who cares about you and wants to see you succeed.”
And to the donors who make this mission possible, Taivin offers a message of deep gratitude.
“Thank you for making all of this possible,” he said. “I’m truly grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given because of your support. The impact you’ve had on my life — and now my son’s future — is something I’ll always care deeply about. You’re not just helping students, you’re helping families for generations.”
