The drums hadn’t even started yet, but the Rec Center was already buzzing. It was the kind of excited, can’t‑sit‑still energy that only happens when students know something big is about to unfold … our annual Powwow Royalty Competition!
On September 9 at St. Joseph’s Indian School, students, staff and families gathered in the Rec Center to take it all in. The evening opened with prayer, grounding everyone in gratitude and purpose. Contestants introduced themselves in Lakota/Dakota, shared thoughtful interview responses, demonstrated their powwow dance styles and answered questions from staff judges.
While it would be wonderful to award this honor to all of our students, only three winners can be chosen.
Introducing the 2026 Powwow Royalty
After a tight competition filled with heart, bravery and cultural pride, three students were selected to represent St. Joseph’s Indian School as the newly crowned 2026 Powwow Royalty:
Miss St. Joseph’s: Anjalyn — A Fancy dancer whose confidence and grace lit up the floor.
“My favorite Lakota value is probably Honesty … If you’re just honest with everything, everything will be okay,” said Anjalyn.

Jr. Miss St. Joseph’s: Arihanni — A returning royalty member and Jingle Dress dancer who continues to inspire with her dedication to culture.
“I wanted to be crowned tonight because I wanted my family to be proud of me,” said Arihanni.

Eagle Staff Carrier: Brayden — A Fancy dancer who carries himself with humility and purpose.
“I like my culture because I feel like it’s something that we lost and I can regain what we lost,” said Brayden.

This year’s Powwow Royalty Competition sets the stage for St. Joseph’s 50th Annual Powwow — a milestone celebration of culture, connection and community. Students, families, alumni and guests will gather on Sept. 19, 2026, to honor traditions that have been carried forward for generations.
The evening’s excitement could not end without a sentiment of gratitude for you, our supportive donors.
“Thank you, donors!” said Anjalyn. “This whole school probably couldn’t be what it is now without you guys.”
We captured the entire competition — including interviews with this year’s winners — in a special video. You can watch the excitement, the pride and the unforgettable moments on our YouTube channel.
