Picture this: a room full of laughter as students tilt their heads back, eyes squinting in concentration, trying to wiggle an Oreo from their foreheads down to their mouths — without using their hands. Cheers erupt when someone finally succeeds, and the whole family group celebrates together.
It’s silly, it’s joyful and it’s exactly the kind of memory that makes Thiyóšpaye Night at St. Joseph’s Indian School so unforgettable.
On Wednesday, November 19, St. Joseph’s Indian School gathered for this cherished tradition, celebrating the Lakota concept of thiyóšpaye — extended family. When you read the word family, you might automatically think of bloodlines, but at St. Joseph’s, it’s more about belonging.
“Thiyóšpaye represents the deep connection of an extended family, a concept spoken with pride and reverence in our community,” said Joe, Director of Mission Integration. “At St. Joseph’s Indian School, we wholeheartedly believe that whether a child is with us for one year or many, they are a valued member of our St. Joseph’s thiyóšpaye.”

The evening began in the Rec Center, where students gathered by family groups to receive instructions for “Minute-to-Win-It” games until the end of the event where students were able to pie some staff members in the face! Cousins, siblings and campus family members teamed up, filling the space with laughter and encouragement.
“It is so fun! I get to be with my whole family! Yay!” said Camuary, a St. Joseph’s student.
Afterward, families joined in prayer before heading to the Dining Hall for a shared meal. Each family group sat together at designated tables, strengthening bonds over food and conversation. The students themselves summed up the spirit of the evening best:
“I like family night because we get to be with our family,” said Cedar, a student.
And how fitting that this celebration falls in the Thanksgiving season. Just as Thanksgiving invites us to pause, give thanks and gather around the table, Thiyóšpaye Night reminds us that gratitude is best expressed in community.
Finally, we extend our deepest gratitude to our donors. Your generosity not only meets the daily needs of our students but also gives them experiences like this — moments of joy, belonging, and family connection that they will carry in their hearts for years to come. Philámayaye — thank you — for being part of our thiyóšpaye.
