Back at St. Joseph’s for the weekend!

It’s been four weeks since I’ve been gone. It felt so good to sleep in my own bedroom.

Even better was the chance to enjoy the warm sunny day by walking around campus and stopping in at many of the homes to visit students and houseparents and find out how they’re doing.

I didn’t always find out a lot new because the conversation quickly turned to my treatments and prognosis. It would have been easier to share all at once, but in each home I repeated the process.

Staff have been concerned about me and praying for me and seemed relieved that I’m able to be out and about and still have energy and an upbeat spirit. And, God willing I’ll be back in a couple of weeks to make the rounds more regularly.

I only encountered four girls in the Summerlee Home, but saw a softball and gloves in the yard and quickly organized a little batting practice. When pitching to younger kids, the challenge of pitching is not to try to get it past them, but to try to figure out where they swing so the ball has a better chance of hitting the bat.

Since they started intramural games last week, a few of the girls looked like batting champs!

At St. Joseph's Indian School, our privately-funded programs for Lakota (Sioux) children in need have evolved over 90 years of family partnership, experience and education. Because of generous friends who share tax-deductible donations, Native American youth receive a safe, stable home life; individual counseling and guidance; carefully planned curriculum based on Lakota culture and individual student needs and tools to help build confidence, boost self-esteem and improve cultural awareness. All of this helps children to live a bright, productive, possibility-filled future.

  1. Know what, Father ? You may have some battinvg champs there, for real..! Plenty of practice and an urge to do it…That’s what it takes. My cousin, Norma Norman (Sinclair) is in the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame..for Women’s Softball..I always thought she was the best EVER…! But it was a lifelong pursuit. She played professionally for Greenwood Electric, out of Des Moines.
And as for you..We are glad to know that you are in there pitchin’..for REAL..Keep it up, Good Buddy..!
    Always in our prayers.!

  2. Fr. Steve: Greetings! I mentioned your name at Holy Communion, Easter morning at St. Paul’s, Jesup, GA, when we prayed for the sick.
Still keeping you in my personal prayers and looking forward to your returning to St. Joseph’s School.

  3. Dear Father Steve, I hope you can keep your hopes and Spirits up even when you are feeling down. Like I was told, “Go beyond your feelings and thought and keep what you know God has promised you in your heart and your recovery will soon be over and a new life will begin in a deeper belief in ALL of God’s promises. Love Patty ann

  4. Dear Father Steve,

as a cancer survivor of ten years I have been where you are now going. It is scary in the beginning, isn’t it? But it sounds like you are doing well with your radiation and making some new friends, too. We all are praying for you to be cancer-free and back at St. Joseph’s soon. You are in my prayers every day.

  5. Dear Fr. Steve –

  6. My thoughts and prayers are with you every day. I know the fatigue and the ups and downs of every day. But when the sun shines and the warm breezes blow, then we can think of miracles. I pray that the Divine Physician will grant you a healing miracle so you can return to your children.

  7. Father Steve:
It was so good seeing you at Mayo. We are back to Mayo for a couple of days and all of next week. Give us a call so we can get together. God bless you on your journey. Our prayers are with you.
