St. Joseph’s Annual Staff vs. Students Basketball Game Brings Big Smiles

Cheering crowds, creative plays, and plenty of laughter made this year’s Staff vs. Students basketball game a slam dunk for fun and community spirit at St. Joseph’s Indian School.

March Madness reached new heights at St. Joseph’s Indian School on March 26 as our students and staff took to the court for the annual Staff vs. Students basketball game — a tradition filled with laughter, energy and unforgettable moments.

The event is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year, drawing a big crowd from each campus home to cheer on their favorite players and staff members. It took a little extra patience this year to get the ball rolling (or dribbling), as the original game date had to be rescheduled due to a massive winter storm (that’s South Dakota for you). However, the wait only heightened the excitement when game day finally arrived and it was well worth it.

Staff brought their A-game when it came to playing our St. Joseph’s Indian School athletes!

With counselors, support staff, houseparents and more lacing up their sneakers, our staff team brought plenty of enthusiasm to the game. But this wasn’t your typical matchup — things got delightfully creative when even the referee decided to score! With playful twists on the rules and hilarious moments, it’s safe to say that basketball was reimagined in an entertaining way.

“We might call it a basketball game, but it’s really a celebration of connection and camaraderie,” said Bryan, St. Joseph’s Athletic Director. “The students bring their A-game every year, and the staff do their best to keep up! It’s all in good fun, and that’s what makes it so special.”

The students played their hearts out, and the sportsmanship displayed by both teams was as inspiring as the skills on the court. While we think the staff may have edged out the win this year, the real victory came as the echoes of cheers filled the gym. It was clear this game was about so much more than the final score — it was about bringing people together.

Students and staff at St. Joseph’s Indian School hit the court for the highly anticipated Staff vs. Students basketball game, bringing March Madness-level excitement to the Rec Center gym.

“Good game, everyone! Staff, thank you for joining us, and kids, thanks for being who you are!” said Scott, a St. Joseph’s counselor who doubled as the game announcer.

For a closer look at the fun, check out the video that captured some of the highlights from the game. You’ll also notice the gym looks a bit like a construction zone on the south end, and that’s because of our Rec Center renovation and expansion taking place! We’re already looking forward to next year’s matchup! Who knows what surprises will unfold next time?
