Sunglasses for the Soul

Just like sunglasses help us see clearly in bright light, Jesus helps us draw near to God, guiding and protecting us every step of the way.

Have you ever tried looking directly at the sun? Its brilliance is too much to take in. It’s overwhelming, powerful and even dangerous without protection. And yet, it lights our world, gives us life and helps us see everything. In many ways, God is like the sun. He is holy, radiant and perfect, far too powerful for our human eyes to look directly at.

But in His mercy, God gave us something that allows us to see Him more clearly and draw near without being burned by His divine greatness. He gave us Jesus.

Jesus is like a pair of sunglasses. The perfect filter that makes it possible to look toward God without damaging our eyes. Through Jesus, we begin to understand the heart of our Creator. Through His life, death and resurrection, we see the path to the Father. Jesus shields us, teaches us and ultimately brings us into relationship with God.

Jesus is pictured in Our Lady of the Sioux Chapel, a powerful visual reminder that He is the way to the Father.

But sunglasses don’t just appear on our faces. Someone has to hand them to us. Someone has to help us understand how to use them, when to wear them and why they matter.

That’s where YOU, our generous supporters, come in.

At St. Joseph’s Indian School, you do more than provide warm meals and clean clothes. You do more than support classrooms or help provide healthcare. You are the reason children put on their sunglasses … you introduce them to Jesus.

  • You create a safe home where love replaces fear.
  • You provide a quality education that prepares their minds for the future.
  • But most importantly, you share the light of Christ that they will carry for eternity.
Our smiling and fulfilled students radiate joy because they have Jesus in their lives.

Through your support, Native American children — some who may have once felt lost in the shadows — begin to see the light. They discover hope, healing and purpose. They begin to see God, not as someone far away and untouchable, but as a loving Father who longs to be close.

Jesus makes that closeness possible. And you make Jesus known.

Thank you for helping the Lakota (Sioux) children put on their sunglasses. Because of you, they are drawing closer to God — step by step, heart by heart — with every dream they begin to believe in.

As a new school year begins, we are filled with excitement and gratitude. With your continued support, the light will keep shining brightly in the hearts of our students. Here’s to another year of growing, learning and drawing nearer to God together.

Wóphila tȟáŋkamany thanks — for shining His light so brightly.

At St. Joseph's Indian School, our privately-funded programs for Lakota (Sioux) children in need have evolved over 90 years of family partnership, experience and education. Because of generous friends who share tax-deductible donations, Native American youth receive a safe, stable home life; individual counseling and guidance; carefully planned curriculum based on Lakota culture and individual student needs and tools to help build confidence, boost self-esteem and improve cultural awareness. All of this helps children to live a bright, productive, possibility-filled future.
