As fireworks brighten the sky each 4th of July, we’re reminded how even a brief spark can lift our eyes, warm our spirits and bring people together. But long after the last shimmer fades, another kind of light remains — one that doesn’t crackle or roar, yet guides us just the same.
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” — John 8:12
God’s light is steady. Hope’s light is persistent. And the light we create for one another is lasting.
At St. Joseph’s Indian School, we see that light every day — in the resilience of our Lakota (Sioux) students, in the dedication of families and staff and in the generosity of a kȟolá — friend — like you who helps make safety, learning and healing possible.
This Independence Day, as our nation celebrates 250 years of freedom, we invite you to pause and notice the quiet lights around you: kindness given, prayers spoken, compassion extended. These are the lights that strengthen our country far more than any firework ever could. We’re also incredibly grateful for the men and women who sacrifice so much for our freedom in the United States of America.
Please join us in a moment of prayer.

From all of us at St. Joseph’s Indian School, may your Independence Day be filled with warmth, hope and the quiet glow of God’s presence.
If you or someone you love needs prayer, we are honored to lift you up. Share us your intentions at stjo.org/prayer.
