St. Joseph’s Students Explore Faith and Future at Notre Dame

Walking the grounds of the University of Notre Dame during the AICSN Middle School Pilgrimage became an opportunity for students to see higher education as a path that could truly belong to them.

Some moments help students see a wider horizon than they knew existed. For four St. Joseph’s Indian School middle schoolers, stepping onto the University of Notre Dame campus became one of those moments — a chance to deepen their faith, imagine their futures and connect with Native American peers walking similar paths.

Our students joined 62 other students from eight American Indian Catholic Schools Network (AICSN) schools for the largest-ever AICSN Middle School Pilgrimage at the University of Notre Dame.

The pilgrimage provided students with an opportunity to deepen their faith, explore college life and connect with Native peers from across the country. Representing St. Joseph’s were Kyler, Jordanna, Margaret and Romeo, accompanied by St. Joseph’s staff, Ben and Sabrie.

Joining 62 peers at Notre Dame, St. Joseph’s staff and students experienced a pilgrimage designed to inspire, connect and open doors to future possibilities.

Throughout the experience, students participated in simulated college classes, visited the Grotto, enjoyed recreational activities like ice skating and heard from several inspiring speakers. One memorable highlight was a presentation from Leah Macy of the Notre Dame Women’s Basketball team.

According to Ben, the pilgrimage serves as an introduction to higher education in a way that feels natural and accessible for students.

“This trip is a really subtle way to introduce higher education,” Ben said. “It isn’t forced on the students considering they are in seventh and eighth grade.”

The experience also helped students envision their own futures. While walking across the Notre Dame campus, Romeo reflected how opportunities like this help students see themselves pursuing post-secondary education.

Beyond exploring a college campus, students returned with new friendships, strengthened faith and a broader perspective on the possibilities that await them after their time at St. Joseph’s.
