St. Joseph’s Indian School students, Roxy and Ava, stepped onto the airplane, their eyes wide with excitement and just a hint of nervousness. The hum of the engines filled the cabin as they buckled their seatbelts, gripping the armrests in anticipation. For Roxy, this was her very first flight — an experience she had only imagined until now. As the plane hurdled down the runway and lifted into the sky, the two girls peered out the window, watching South Dakota disappear beneath the clouds. They were heading southeast — farther than they had ever traveled before — on a journey made possible only through St. Joseph’s and the generosity of donors who believe in them.
This journey to Boca Raton, Florida, was more than just a trip. It was an opportunity for two students, a freshman and a junior, to represent St. Joseph’s, share their stories and connect with the people who make their education and experiences possible. What awaited them was a world of firsts — new places, new faces and new experiences they would never forget.
Connecting with Donors
A donor event is a heartfelt opportunity for supporters to witness firsthand the impact of their generosity. These special events bring donors together with our students and staff, offering an inside look at the programs and resources that change lives. Through personal stories and shared experiences, donors hear directly from the children how their support provides education, cultural opportunities and a nurturing environment. Roxy and Ava had the incredible chance to travel with St. Joseph’s staff and Father Greg, sharing their journey and gratitude with those who make their education possible.

From the moment they arrived at the donor event, Roxy and Ava were welcomed with open arms by supporters eager to learn more about them and their Lakota (Sioux) culture. They both enjoyed sharing their stories and forming new friendships with people who truly care about their education and future.
“I liked the event because all the people were nice and very easy to talk to,” Roxy shared.
Ava agreed, “Everybody was so nice and genuine and wanted to understand our culture more. I liked when everybody would clap because I felt so famous! I met a lot of new friends. A lot of people are going to come to powwow and I hope I get to see them.”
For donors, hearing directly from the students was one of the most powerful parts of the event.
“My favorite part was the two young ladies [Roxy & Ava] speaking,” said Kent, a donor in attendance “You could feel that they spoke from the heart with the answers that they gave. It almost brought me to tears because you don’t always get a chance to see what some of these children have come through in their lives and how much the school has helped them, which is tremendous.”
Another donor, Judith, reflected on the event’s impact.
“I feel more connected to St. Joseph’s after coming to this event,” said Judith “I found that every penny that I’ve put in has been well used, which is so rewarding.”
Exploring Florida and Experiencing Firsts
Beyond the event, the trip was filled with exciting adventures — many of them first-time experiences for the girls. Once in Florida, they had the chance to explore the beautiful landscapes and wildlife of the state.
Roxy and Ava documented their time in Florida with a vlog! Watch it now to see all the fun that was had!
They embarked on an airboat tour through the Everglades, spotting alligators in their natural habitat. At Butterfly World, the girls were surrounded by breathtaking scenery and were able to admire every colorful kimímela — butterfly — that fluttered near them. A visit to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center gave them an up-close look at ocean life, expanding their understanding of marine ecosystems.
Perhaps the most thrilling moment was stepping into the ocean for the first time. They waded into the endless blue water, the waves surrounding them. The girls’ reactions summed it up perfectly.

Ava stated, “The ocean is so salty!”
Roxy stood in astonishment and said, “The ocean is so big!”
Leaving an Impact
Throughout the trip, Roxy and Ava expressed gratitude for the opportunity to travel, meet new people and experience many new things.
“My favorite part of the trip was Butterfly World and meeting all the wonderful donors,” Ava said.
Roxy added, “Thank you to all the donors for everything you do — for making a trip like this possible. It was very fun and I am very glad we got to meet you guys!”
A St. Joseph’s staff member and a chaperone for the girls, Shawn, reflected on the lasting impact of the trip, saying, “I believe the kids are leaving here impacted because they feel that the donors believe in them wholeheartedly.”
As the students returned home to St. Joseph’s Indian School, they carried with them not only seashells from the beach but memories of an incredible journey, a deeper appreciation for our donors and the excitement of a future filled with endless possibilities.
Philámayaye — thank you — to all our supporters who made a trip like this possible. Your generosity and kindness continue to make a difference in the lives of Lakota boys and girls!
