Built with Love: The Rec Center Dedication at St. Joseph’s Indian School

Jennifer, St. Joseph’s CEO, addressed the audience with a warm welcome at the start of the Rec Center Dedication prayer service.

Two and a half years ago, we began a marathon — not of miles, but of mission. The Recreation Center at St. Joseph’s Indian School, once a modest space for play and movement, became the focus of a bold vision: to create a sanctuary of wellness, community and hope for the Lakota (Sioux) children and families we serve.

The journey was long. Like the final lap of a race, it demanded endurance, faith and the unwavering support of our generous donors. Today, we are thrilled to share the finish line has been crossed! The Rec Center renovation and expansion is complete, and it is beautiful.

On a September morning during the 49th Annual Powwow events, students, families, staff and benefactors gathered for a Dedication Ceremony that honored not just the building, but the spirit behind it.

“It is my honor to welcome you all to the dedication of our newly renovated Recreation Center,” said Jenny, St. Joseph’s CEO, as she opened the dedication ceremony. “We are deeply grateful to our many supporters whose generosity made this new facility possible.”

Fr. Greg, Chaplain and President of St. Joseph’s, provided a blessing to the expanded space and some of the equipment our Lakota students will use in the new space.

Fr. Greg, St. Joseph’s Chaplain and President, led the audience in prayer, blessing the space as a sanctuary where “bodies are strengthened, hearts uplifted and spirits renewed.”

The ceremony continued with a Four Directions Prayer and song by the Chalk Hills Singers, honoring Lakota tradition and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Staff members tied prayer flags representing generosity, courage, guidance and compassion — each one a symbol of the sacred work that will unfold within these walls.

“Yours are the hands of experience and skill that reach out with compassion,” prayed Fr. Greg as he addressed the Rec Center staff. “You lift the hearts of those who compete. Your hands celebrate the joy of success. Your hands bless all whom they touch with the spirit of care.”

This building is more than bricks and beams. It’s a place where children will grow stronger and healthier. It’s a place they will learn to lead and be the best teammates. Most of all, it’s a place where they can just be kids who run, play and make memories with their friends.

It’s where our mission comes full circle.

Pictured here is the new gym that was built thanks to generous donors from around the world!

Thanks to your support, the Rec Center now includes:

  • Two full-size basketball courts.
  • A welcoming new entryway with storage for coats, bags and shoes.
  • Two new locker rooms.
  • Separate exercise areas for staff and students.
  • Office space and a conference room.
  • ADA-compliant features throughout.
  • An additional 17,500 sq. ft. of space to serve more children more effectively.

This transformation was born from a deep understanding of the challenges Native American children face — health disparities, poverty and cycles of trauma. But it was fueled by hope. And by you.

“It’s amazing, awesome and really a place for the kids to come to life and connect with one another,” said Filip and Johanna, donors from Colorado.

As Jenny closed the ceremony, she reminded us that, although the dedication ceremony of this new building was short in nature, “today marks the beginning of a long journey of wellness and joy for those we serve.”

To every donor who walked this journey with us, philámayayethank you. You didn’t just help St. Joseph’s Indian School finish the race. You helped us build a home.

“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in health; I know that it is well with your soul.” — 3 John 1:2

At St. Joseph's Indian School, our privately-funded programs for Lakota (Sioux) children in need have evolved over 90 years of family partnership, experience and education. Because of generous friends who share tax-deductible donations, Native American youth receive a safe, stable home life; individual counseling and guidance; carefully planned curriculum based on Lakota culture and individual student needs and tools to help build confidence, boost self-esteem and improve cultural awareness. All of this helps children to live a bright, productive, possibility-filled future.
