Christmas Magic at St. Joseph’s Indian School: A Heartwarming Tradition

Staff members lovingly wrap each present, transforming them into beautifully decorated gifts that add to the festive cheer and excitement of the holiday season.

The holiday season sparkles with magic at St. Joseph’s Indian School, where the annual Christmas Store transforms the Depot into a festive wonderland of giving and joy.

This annual tradition of the Christmas Store stands out as a beloved highlight every December. Lakota (Sioux) students get the opportunity to experience the magic of giving first-hand. However, this unique event is not just about presents; it’s about creating cherished memories, fostering generosity and bringing students and staff together to celebrate the love and kindness shared by generous donors.

The holiday magic comes alive as students leave the Christmas Store with their carefully selected and wrapped gifts, ready to bring joy to their families this Christmas.

As the students enter the Christmas Store, their faces light up with excitement. Each child receives seven precious tickets, ready to be exchanged for seven thoughtful gifts for their loved ones.

Tara, the Residential Coordinator for 4th-6th grade girls, said students make a list of who they want to shop for, and staff help them find the perfect gifts. Whether it is a toy car for a beloved cousin or a shiny new wrench for Dad, each gift is selected with great consideration and joy.

“Seeing the joy on their faces and their excitement about getting to go get gifts for their family members — we love it! That’s why we do it. We enjoy their joy,” said Tara.

As she shopped, one student proudly held up a white and pink fleece blanket, beaming, “This is for my little sister. She is four weeks old.”

The students’ shopping spree is just the beginning. What makes this experience even more special is the staff’s effort to wrap each gift with care.

“We try to make them as pretty as we can before they get to take theirs home with them,” said Tara.

The wrapping process is a labor of love, ensuring that each present looks as delightful on the outside as it will feel to receive on the inside.

“We try really hard to give the kids an experience of buying something special for their families,” said Tara, elaborating further. “For some of them, this is their Christmas. We try to make sure that they have as much of a Christmas experience as those of us who can have it for ourselves.”

A group of beaming girls proudly hold sacks brimming with gifts for their families, embodying the joy and generosity fostered by the Christmas Store at St. Joseph’s Indian School.

This sentiment captures the essence of the Christmas Store. It’s about more than just material gifts; it’s about ensuring that every child feels the warmth and joy of the holiday season in both giving and receiving.

This heartwarming tradition at St. Joseph’s Indian School is a testament to the power of generosity and the true spirit of Christmas. Each thoughtful gift, wrapped with love and carried home by eager little hands, represents the heart and soul of St. Joseph’s Indian School – a community bound together by faith, generosity and the true spirit of Christmas.
