Happy St. Patrick’s Day from St. Joseph’s Indian School!

Have you ever sat down at a dinner table with a child, and the last food left on his or her plate was green?

Adult: Will you please try it?
Child: No.
Adult: You won’t know if you like it until you taste it.
Child: No.
Adult: Why?
Child: It’s greeeeen!

Unfortunately, green does not mean “go” when it’s displayed at the dinner table. Rather, it’s a color that stops children in their tracks. Poor, poor broccoli is notorious for being the last to vanish on a plate — all the green veggies, really.

Will you join us in having a little fun this St. Patrick’s Day — the greenest holiday of the year? Some of our Lakota (Sioux) students volunteered to be blindfolded taste-testers, but little do they know the foods they are about to try are some of the greenest foods on the planet. That’s right! Broccoli is finally about to get a fair shake as we see if our students will use the word “yummy” instead of “yucky” if they don’t see the green color first.

Don’t worry, this blindfolded taste-test will also feature some green sweet treats — we’re not monsters!

At St. Joseph's Indian School, our privately-funded programs for Lakota (Sioux) children in need have evolved over 90 years of family partnership, experience and education. Because of generous friends who share tax-deductible donations, Native American youth receive a safe, stable home life; individual counseling and guidance; carefully planned curriculum based on Lakota culture and individual student needs and tools to help build confidence, boost self-esteem and improve cultural awareness. All of this helps children to live a bright, productive, possibility-filled future.
