St. Joseph’s Indian School Crowned Top-Rated Nonprofit for Sixth Consecutive Year

St. Joseph’s Indian School was named a GreatNonprofits Top-Rated Nonprofit for the sixth year in a row.

St. Joseph’s Indian School was recently named a “2022 Top-Rated Nonprofit” by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews of charities and nonprofits.

President Mike Tyrell feels the recognition directly results from the entire organization’s hard work and the faithful support of donors.

“Thanks to GreatNonprofits for the award. We are honored and humbled to be acknowledged as a top-rated charity. We do fantastic things here partnering with Native American youth and their families in our mission to educate for life – mind, body, heart and spirit – and this award affirms the diligence and hard work of many.”

The rating and number of reviews that St. Joseph’s Indian School received from volunteers, donors and aid recipients are the basis for the Top-Rated Nonprofit Award.

One reviewer writes, “I have supported St. Joseph’s Indian School since 2003 because they not only teach Native American children the skills they need to succeed in modern society, but [also] educate them in the traditional ways of their culture, as well as the near-extinct Lakota language. The school is also about more than education: It provides health care to the students, help for abused women, counseling for each student … and during the summer a bookmobile that travels to the reservations and a day camp.”

Executive Director of Development Kory Christianson is grateful for the continued strong support of donors.

“We receive such support from all over the country and the world. To be recognized as a top-rated charity not only edifies the work of all staff with our families and students but also acknowledges the wówačhaŋtognake –  great generosity – of our friends and benefactors who ensure we can fulfill our mission,” he said.

GreatNonprofits is the leading website where people share stories about their personal experiences with more than 1.6 million charities and nonprofits. The GreatNonprofits Top-Rated Awards are the only awards for nonprofits determined by those with direct experience with charities as donors, volunteers and aid recipients.

At St. Joseph's Indian School, our privately-funded programs for Lakota (Sioux) children in need have evolved over 90 years of family partnership, experience and education. Because of generous friends who share tax-deductible donations, Native American youth receive a safe, stable home life; individual counseling and guidance; carefully planned curriculum based on Lakota culture and individual student needs and tools to help build confidence, boost self-esteem and improve cultural awareness. All of this helps children to live a bright, productive, possibility-filled future.

  1. If I were to outfit one child, would you pick the child and provide her name and sizes?
Also, I need the address for Amazon to deliver.
I specified a girl because I had six girls and one boy. Thanks and God Bless!

    1. Hello Lynn,
When we get this kind of question, we typically ask for the donor to choose a size. We need all clothing for children in sizes 7/8 child all the way up to adult sizes. If you purchase from our Amazon list, the address will fill in for you. Just in case, the address you will need is: 1301 N. Main Street, Chamberlain, SD 57325.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity!

  2. This is wonderful recognition for the great work done by this outstanding school. I have an earned PhD in Education from Cornell University and feel that I can Teattest to the outstanding job of preparing these young scholars for their future lives. Job well done, congratulations!

  3. I am so impressed by your stellar awards!

As a monthly contributor to Stjo and also having donated a substantial gift at the years’ end from my IRA, I am proud to be a part of your success!

  4. I have been a donor for years and each year I see more and more reasons why St.Joseph’s is my main donation site. Not only are the agendas for classes impressive but the activities offered are top rate, especially offering creative classes for students.
They also listen to suggestions; case in point =the therapy horses. which I have suggested for several years. Working with therapy for both adults and children, it was wonderful to see horses had come to St. Joe’s.
Congratulations to the staff, you all deserve the award!

  5. So happy to know we are helping a top rated charity-St. Joseph School.
We always enjoy reading of the activities, and especially the accomplishments of those who have graduated.
    God bless.

  6. This past October 2023, I took a solo drive to the Badlands National Park and back home in the Chicago, IL area, a total of 2,100 miles all in I-90 which went right past Chamberlin, SD, and since I have been sending donations to SJIS I decided to stop by and visit the campus. I was pleasantly surprised with the area and especially the chapel of Our Lady of the Sioux. Quiet, simple and nothing extravagant. The cultural museum, which is on the campus, was well done and interesting to visit.
