It’s been a project over a year in the making, but soon St. Joseph Indian School’s new Health and Family Services Center will be up-and-running. To celebrate this new facility, there will be an open house and ribbon cutting during St. Joseph’s powwow celebration. In the second grade, students are accustomed to sharing their crayons or scissors with their classmates on a regular basis. But, recently, some of the smallest of students at St. Joseph’s Indian School had the opportunity to give back to some individuals outside of their classrooms in a larger way. “Look! I’m a kitty-cat!” exclaimed Darliss, a St. Joseph’s Indian School student, as she pointed to her ears.
However, she wasn’t pointing to her own, God-given ears, but rather the kitten ears painted on her forehead. The ears were coupled with whiskers stretched across her cheeks and a black nose. The Native American student had just gotten her face painted during the Back-to-School Picnic, hosted by St. Joseph’s Indian School, to welcome students and their families back to campus on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017. Though some things ended with graduation mid-May, others have kept moving along… helping us focus on the future and what comes next!
STEP-UP DAY
Before the end of the school year, our students got the chance to visit the classrooms they will be in next year on what we call ‘Step Up Day!’
FIELD DAY
During the last week of school, our 1st-8th grade students participated in Field Day. Field Day is an annual St. Joseph’s event that helps our students burn off a bit of energy and make a few extra fun memories before the school year culminates. Whew! It’s all over.
Our 89th school year has come to a close with the graduation of our high school students on Mother’s Day and our 8th graders on May 26. On May 25 and 26, all students returned home to their families for the summer.
HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES
Our four high school graduates—Justin, Danielle, Lilly and Ashley—joined their classmates to walk across the stage, receive their diplomas and take the first steps into their futures. Justin is looking forward to learning how to weld, Danielle will study nursing, Lilly is interested in Astrophysics and Ashely is currently undecided. SOFTBALL
The softball season kicked off last Monday evening with a lot of fans in the bleachers to watch and cheer on their favorite team. Since I was watching from the SCJ Community House, I felt like I had a box seat at the Toronto Blue Jays’ stadium! (They have a hotel in deep center so you can watch the game from your room). Holiday greetings from St. Joseph’s Indian School!
SNOW
The good weather South Dakota has been blessed with took a harsh turn when snow, wind and falling temperatures all hit at once. Just across the Missouri River, nearby towns were hit with 3 inches of snow.
A special thank you to our maintenance staff who were hard at work early in the morning to keep our campus open.
The temperatures had dropped and the wind had come up the day before, which made for a chilly blessing for our new outdoor basketball court, donated by a benefactor from the Chicago area.
